With a new name and a new home, Venture Lab — formerly known as Penn Wharton Entrepreneurship — is the culmination of a nearly 50-year journey to help aspiring founders at Wharton and across the university realize their visions. "We’re not just building a new brand,” says Venture Lab Executive Director Trang Pham WG18. “We’re expanding the presence and availability of entrepreneurship.”
It’s safe to say Brown-Philpot knows a thing or two (or a hundred) about corporate innovation. She sat down with Venture Lab Executive Director Trang Pham for a conversation about how to scale innovation during the Wharton School’s Whitney M. Young Jr. Memorial Conference on February 19, 2021.
In this episode, Trang talks about her background as an immigrant to the US, and her path from management consulting, to supporting Government innovation, and to her role today as Executive Director of the Venture Lab at the University of Pennsylvania. She tells us about educating and exposing students to not only the idea of entrepreneurship and innovation, but also the practice.
“When the year grows cold, the pine and cypress show their quality,’” says Wharton's Trang Pham. “This Chinese proverb reminds us that many companies can grow only with plentiful resources but the evergreens thrive in market adversity...lean ventures will continue to flourish if they can offer a great, unique product that scratches a real itch in the market."
“This is a space that is primarily driven by Wharton and Engineering, but is really for everybody,” adds Trang Pham, Executive Director of Venture Lab. “And it’s not just a benefit to the rest of the community, it’s a benefit to Wharton and Engineering students to have more diversity on their team."
